It works great in Firefox 3.6 (Windows Vista).

Great tool!

Suggestion: instead of flashing each stroke, can you make it "draw itself" in the right direction (left to right, right to left, etc)?

I try to associate the tones to English "tones". This is what I came up with and it helps me :) It's a phone conversation at 2am between 2 people (Q and A;; A says all the "tone" words):

Q: I just bought a Rolls Royce!

A: whaaaat (tone 1)

Q: You have to see it. Come on over!

A: when? (tone 2)

J: Right away!

R: now?!?! (tone 3), but it's 2 am!

J: Hurry up!

R: no (tone 4)

So, when I don't remember the Chinese tone, I quickly run through my: whaaat1, when2, now3 and no4

Does anyone have interesting memory aids like this? :)

Cheers,

@echo and david,

Thanks for your suggestions. In January I started learning Chinese using CD's, books, and some online videos, but I wasn't really learning.

I started the Absolute Beginner at Pop Up Chinese and finally I AM learning!

I listen to the podcasts, review the pdf, listen again and then listen some more and repeat as I listen. So, I am slowly developing listening and some speaking abilities :)

As far as reading hanzi, I try to learn all the hanzi in each lesson, and I also try to learn a few from the HSK list, but it is often difficult for me to remember the hanzi. Also sometimes I get 2 hanzi confused: to me "wo3 我" and "qian2 钱" look alike (lol).

Any suggestions on how to develop reading comprehension (character recognition)? BTW, your Firefox dictionary pop up is AWESOME!

Thanks!多谢!

@echo,

Thanks for your reply. You said that nei4 is shorthand for na4yi1. Is nei4ge shorthand for na4yi1ge? Is na4 shorthand for anything? And finally, is na4ge shorthand for anything? Please excuse so many questions, but I am a newbie and I don't know the word origins :)
